There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP(2)? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP(2,出现,存在)? Why do we speak UP(3) and why are the officers UP(具备) for election and why is it UP to(someone's duty) to the secretary to write up(4) a report?
We call up(5) our friends, And we use it to brighten UP(4) a room, polish UP(3/4) the silver(引申意:刀叉); we warm up(3) the leftovers(剩菜剩饭) and clean up(4) the kitchen, We lock UP(5) the house and som guys fix UP(4) the old car.
At other times, the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble(搅局,找麻烦), line up(排队) for tickets, work UP(有做某事的心情) an appetite, and think UP excuses(找借口).
To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP(4) is special.
And this UP is confusing: A drain(厕所,厨房的下水管道) must be poened UP(疏通) beacuse it is stopped UP(5). We open UP(5) a store in the morning but we close it up(5) at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP(搅) about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in a dictionary. In a desk-sized dicitonary, it takes up(占据) almost 1/4th of the page an can add UP(加在一起) to about eighty definitions. If you are UP to(someone's duty) it, you might try building UP(2) a list of the many ways UP is used.
It will take UP(占据) a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP(放弃), you may wind(/waind/) UP(finish,得出)with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP(5). When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP(6).
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP(泥泞不堪). When it doesn't rain of awhile, things dry UP(6).
